This photo shows pelicans skimming the waves off shore on Seabrook Island. A little googling finds articles that indicate “Skimming permits the birds to take advantage of an aerodynamic phenomenon known as ground effect”.

Following is an article, from Stanford University which explains skimming, why birds fly low over water. Also, a link has been included for today’s photo saved on Flickr with the caption Pelicans looking for fish offshore from Seabrook Island in South Carolina.

Today’s photo was taken from the northern most point of the beach on Seabrook Island. If you look closely you see water on three sides of the photo. There was also water behind me when I took the photo. Actually the beach is L shaped and you have a beach path.

As our stroll came to an end I took this photo showing the changing light as the sun began to set. The sky was clear, the winds were low, and we had a smile on our face as we left the beach.

wind power

Yesterday we saw this windy buggy on the beach. While Googling the subject I found several names; Landsailer, Kite Buggy, Blowcard, Trike Buggy, Land Yacht Tricycle, Landsegler, Strandsegler, and Zooter.

Interestingly the person sailing has long sleeves, cloves, mask, goggles, and helmet. I assume because of blowing sand.

skimboarding

During a stroll on the beach we enjoyed watching this young boy skimboarding on his boogie board. The skill and balance where impressive. I tried smimboarding many years ago and never mastered the balance needed.

This is a follow-up to yesterday’s photo showing birds coming to roost. Today’s photo is the human equivalent. Humans enjoying the sunset.

Notice the high tide. I mention this because during low tide there is a wide beach.
